Sunday in the Park With George : Vocal Score
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (July, 1997)
Author: Stephen Sondheim
Average review score:

There is only ¿colour and light¿!
This vocal score contains complete lyrics, dialogue, vocal line and piano accompaniment to the musical Sunday in the Park with George. The great aspect about the vocal score is that it contains ALL the music, even songs which are not featured on the CD. The arrangements are excellent and the melody has not been incorporated into the accompaniment, which is the case with many cheap vocal scores. Inside the score it is mentioned that it 'has been prepared from the composer's piano manuscript rather than the piano-conductors score so that it can be more useful to the rehearsal pianists.' As a result, when the orchestral parts are utilised, some small musical discrepancies will be found. Several of the musical themes are quite repetitive, however there are still almost 250 pages of music to enjoy. The music would be difficult to perform for someone who does not feel confidant playing piano. The difficulty lies in the modern rhythms and sometimes obscure tonal flavour of the music. The key signatures regularly change and g-flat and f-sharp major bob up often. As is characteristic of Sondheim's most recent musicals, the vocal lines would be difficult for singers. However, if you are a vocalist that could handle the music, it would be fantastic to own this book. I personally feel that this is an incredible vocal score of a brilliant musical. If you have a love of Sunday in the Park with George and you enjoy either singing or playing Sondheim I highly recommend this score.

A must have for any Sondheim Fanatic!
At first glance, the price for this selection may seem a trifle hefty. It is worth every penny to be able to own the score to the most emotional musical written by Sondheim. The music is amazing to listen to, but the experience is heightened when one is able to study the score in conjunction with an excellent recording. This score serves as a resource for anyone needing audition music, and it is great as a teaching tool in an advanced Broadway piano class. Incredible buy!

Voices in the Park
Published in Hardcover by Dorling Kindersley Publishing (September, 1998)
Author: Anthony Browne
Average review score:

I wish there was a rating above 5 this is so good!
This brilliantly illustrated story is about four different characters, a bossy woman, a poor man, a lonely boy and a young girl, all apes. Each of the moods of the characters personality is reflected in different seasons and each in a different font. With each voice described you begin to understand the story and the events that are occurring in the park that day. One voice at a time you begin to see them all fit together. The little girls story at the end ties them all together.
I believe that with the story the author is suggesting that we open our eyes and see the big picture. Appreciate what is happening around you. I may not be hitting this right but I read this book over and over and I see a deeper meaning in this story then just to describe the occurrence in the park. I believe that the author wanted to show the simplicity in children's thoughts and show that they are so peaceful and appreciate and want to know everything and everyone without any prejudice or immediate assumptions. Also within the pictures there are so many hidden meanings that you wouldn't notice first off. The pictures display the emotions of the character. An example is one picture where Charles, a boy being reprimanded by his strict mother, meets smudge, a happy go lucky girl. His side of the picture is all gloomy skies and her side is happy and colorful.
There are beautiful paintings in this book that catch the eyes of any age. The creativity of using different fonts was wonderful; it keeps kids interested in what they are reading. I love this book and I feel that every time I pick it up I will find something that I had not noticed before and I love books like that.

Sensitive, sweet, surreal book for kids & adults
A rare book that combines exceptional kid-friendly artwork with a sensitive and subtle look at class. How many children's books do that? An outstanding choice for young readers and adult aficionados. I find something new in the illustrations every time i reread it.

My students enjoyed this book very much.
Our class has discussed the book for a week, pointing out all the interesting things that are on each page. We just wanted to know a little something about the author and why he uses gorillias in his books.

Volcanoes of Northern Arizona: Sleeping Giants of the Grand Canyon Region
Published in Paperback by Grand Canyon Association (01 February, 1998)
Author: Wendell Duffield
Average review score:

Volcanoes: what they are and how they work
Volcanoes are among the most interesting, awesome, and dangerous of geological phenomena. The also form many of the highest mountains we know-Olympus Mons on Mars, Mauna Kea, Popocatepetl, Kilimanjaro and many others on Earth. In spite of this, the average person has only an imprecise idea of what volcanos are and how they work. Duffield's fine book comes to the rescue.

The book addresses specifically volcanoes to be found in northern Arizona, so includes many pages of road logs intended for the resident or visitor to the area, pleasant excursions whose purpose is to illustrate a wealth of volcanic features. The rest of the book, however, is invaluable to anyone interested in learning more about volcanoes anywhere. Even though Duffield is a professional volcanologist of considerable repute, he uses clear language pleasantly free of technical jargon and aimed at the non-specialist. The many illustrations are lucid and well done, and the wonderful photographs by Michael Collier are a splendid asset.

The person interested in learning about volcanoes won't go wrong with this fine book.

Exemplary popular-science writing & gorgeous photos
This book is a wonderful introduction to the San Francisco volcanic field, which created the high country around Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks, the highest mountains in Arizona. Duffield writes in a clear, direct style that's a pleasure to read. The book grew out of a long series of talks and lectures he's given around the Flagstaff - Grand Canyon area -- he quotes a fifth-grader who wrote a thank-you note for "being interesting and not boring," which is a nice capsule review of _Volcanoes_.

Although he's writing for a general audience, geologists who aren't intimately familiar with Northen Arizona will learn of some neat new discoveries -- such as the remarkable similarity between the Mt. St. Helens blowout and the Peaks' long-puzzling Inner Basin (p. 25). And that recent lava-dams on the Colorado River (near present-day Lava Falls) made lakes in Grand Canyon nearly half a mile deep!

And anyone with working eyes will be pleased with Michael Collier's splendid aerial photos -- if you're new to Collier, you will want to seek out his beautiful, large-format _Arizona : A View from Above_, which might be the best book of artistic air photos yet published (and which, sadly, is out of print).

An excellent and invaluable guide when sightseeing Flagstaff
This book covers it all. Accessible text describes in a concise, but not condescending manner, the history of volcanoes in the northern Arizona and Flagstaff area. Excellent, even striking photography. Fine maps and drawings accent the text. This book is suitable reading material for professionals, college students and tourists alike. And an indispensable reference when traveling and sightseeing around Flagstaff, Arizona.

Most people don't realize that Flagstaff is situated near these barely dormant volcanoes which last erupted less than 800 years ago! Highly recommended!

Walt Disney and the Quest for Community
Published in Hardcover by Ashgate Publishing Company (January, 2003)
Author: Steve Mannheim
Average review score:

Researching the Story of Walt Disney's Final Dream
It is clear that it will be the responsibility of historians to accurately reflect the influence that Walt Disney had upon the development of cultural and social structures; beginning during the twentieth century and continuing into a new millennium. Though Walt Disney reflected the social values of his contemporaries in the United States, he also tapped into the essential curiosity that drives all human beings toward exploration and discovery. It is that final phase of Walt Disney's bold and creative exploration that provides the backdrop for this important study.

In "Walt Disney and the Quest for Community", author Steve Mannheim brings Walt's original idea for EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) back to the table after almost four decades of neglect. While the creation of Epcot Center at Walt Disney World provides for an interesting day of amusement, the origins of EPCOT (the community) had far greater implications. Those living and working at the EPCOT of Walt Disney's mind would participate in an innovative commercial, social, and political experiment that would be unprecedented in human history. Regrettably, the genius of Walt Disney was revealed to be finite with his passing in December 1966. With Disney's death, the dream of EPCOT as originally conceived was shelved as being unattainable without the necessary provision of Walt Disney's personal authority and command.

Mannheim's text explores the historical context and influences upon Walt's research and imagination, along with many first hand interviews and accounts from those who worked closely with Disney during this exploratory period in the mid 1960's. The text is expertly researched and provides the most thorough account to date of the vision behind Walt Disney's final dream: E.P.C.O.T.

The Evolution of Walt's EPCOT Concept
This is a great read about Walt Disney's EPCOT concept. It draws upon original interviews, research in archives, Disney company building experience, and history to tell a fascinating story of Walt's original ideas and how they evolved into later projects like Epcot and Celebration. Most important, it is clear that the author has a solid understanding of Walt Disney the man and uses it to put EPCOT into context. In addition, the author provides many references with which I was unfamiliar. Finally, the book is organized in such a way as to make it very accessible. I think that this book will be an important resource for both scholars and Disney fans in the future.

The Story Behind Walt's EPCOT
This well organized, well researched book provides great insight to the original dreams and plans Walt Disney had for the prototype community of tomorrow - the EPCOT that never was built.

A great read for any EPCOT fan, Walt Disney fan or those interested in city plannning.

Wanton's Web (Cassidy McCabe Mystery/Alex Matthews, 4th)
Published in Hardcover by Intrigue Press (April, 1999)
Author: Alex Matthews
Average review score:

I heartily recommend Wanton's Web.
Cassidy McCabe returns in Wanton's Web, amazingly confident and comfortable -- at least to begin. She's finally paid off the debts her ex left her with, Starshine the calico seems happy with monster-kittens gone, and even her relationship with Zach is on an even keel as they discuss plans to marry. Unfortunately, when Zach's past returns with a vengeance, Cassidy finds her life thrown once more into crisis as she and Zach team up to find the killer before the police arrest Zach. The first indication that Zach has a child is when he shows up, at the age of seventeen, unannounced on his and Cassidy's doorstep. Bryce presents his mother's letter by way of introduction, explaining that his mother is concerned for his safety and sent him to stay with Zach for a few days. Not surprisingly, Zach races off to the mother Xandra's apartment to confront her, but he's too late. While Cassidy waits in the car, Zach discovers the body of his former lover lying in a pool of blood. Half drunk, he convinces Cassidy to take him home, promising to call the police in the morning when he's clear headed. But someone saw Zach at Xandra's apartment and will report it to the police. In his round-about style, Zach admits his affair with Xandra seventeen years before when he was in his early twenties: "Xandra had a powerful kind of seductiveness different from anything I've ever encountered before or after. I couldn't get enough of her. Or the drugs that came with her." Zach compared her to a "sexual spiderwoman" who always got what she wanted. As Cassidy unravels the secrets of the past, drawn deeper into the web of deceit and danger, she finds herself questioning Zach's drinking, the possibility of his guilt, and her own weaknesses and vulnerabilities. Though she believes Zach, Cassidy can't help reacting to the power that Xandra wielded over every man she encountered. Even as tension mounts between Cassidy and Zach, they must work together to find the killer before two of Chicago's finest succeed in building their case against him. Alex Matthews sets the standards by which excellent mystery writing may be judged. With sassy finesse, she successfully captures the reader in her web with a catchy story and fantastic characterization, well the earning 1999 Readers Choice Award for Best Character In A Series. Indeed, Matthews lends her characters a power and depth, thereby revealing their vulnerabilities and fears right along with their strengths. I heartily recommend Wanton's Web.

Cindy Penn Reviewer

Loved it
I became comfortable with the characters right away. Cassidy and Zach seemed very real. Her cat, although not her sleuthing partner, helps to ground the characters with actions all pet owners can identify with. I can understand why Alex Matthews won the 1999 Readers Choice Award for BEST CHARACTER IN A SERIES. The entire mystery series is worth reading.

Matthews weaves a wonderful web of an amateur sleuth tale

Psychotherapist Cassidy McCabe believes as life nears perfection, catastrophe strikes. Cassidy feels good about having finally paid off the debts of her former husband that were charged to her account. Even more ecstatic to her mindset is that her lover, commitment-shy Zach Moran finally proposed. However, her heavenly existence abruptly changes when teenager Bryce arrives. Unbeknownst to Zach before the lad showed up is that he sired Bryce, who carries a note from his mother, Xandra, warning that the teen needs protection from a non-described menace.

Zach hates to think back on the sordid past he shared with Xandra. She was a high priced call girl who led him around for three months before dropping him. Zach could not handle her rejection. He drank and stalked her. Once he even got rough with her. Zach visits Xandra to learn more about their son and the threat. However, he finds his ex dead. The police strongly feel he murdered Xandra. Cassidy realizes that since her lover could not have done the deed, someone is setting him up to take the fall. She and Cassidy begin their own sleuthing even knowing they could be the next victims.

The fourth installment in the McCabe mysteries is simply a winner. WANTON'S WEB contains everything amateur sleuth lovers will want in an ongoing series. Besides the duo diving headfirst into a new investigation, the novel includes a murdered ex-lover, an unknown adolescent son, and the growth of the lead protagonists' relationship. It is the last piece that makes Alex Matthews' latest entry an entertaining tale.

Where on Earth is My Bagel?
Published in School & Library Binding by Lee & Low Books (09 September, 2001)
Authors: Frances Park, Ginger Park, and Grace Lin
Average review score:

creating a bagel!
a delightfully simple book with a multi-cultural theme (korea and the usa)...about a little boy in korea wishing for a bagel (which he had never seen nor tasted) and how his community helped to create one and to share in its eating! very well-illustrated and written to be read over and over again.

Beautifully illustrated book
Lots of vibrant colours and a variety of interesting things on each page that hold my 2 year old's interest as I read her the simple, whimsical, and fun story that lends itself to the expansion of the child's mind and imagination. One of the better children's books out there.

Cultural imperialism? no, just the desire for a nice treat
Dear New York,
I would like to order one bagel to go.
Please send it to me as soon as possible.
Respectfully yours,
Yum Yung in Korea

Did Yum Yung dream of cream cheese and a bagel? Did he hear Central Park sparrows twitter about bagel crumbs? Why would he desire a NY bagel? Yum Yung lives in a part of Korea where there are many things, lilacs and waterfalls, streams of daring fish, but no New York bagels. But he knows he must have one. Yum Yung is obsessed with the idea of a bagel. He declares, "I want a bagel!" He sends a message from his Korean village via pigeon to New York City for someone to send him one. As he waits, he asks some locals for help: a farmer, fisherman, and a honeybee keeper. They know their trades and crafts well, but none of them have ever heard of the elusive, holed bagel. A bagel is not a round plow wheel, a salty round life saving ring, or a circle of honey bees. Hmmm, Yum Yung knows just where to get flour, sea salt, and honey. He runs for the Heavenly Bakery, and the pigeon returns from across the ocean, sans bagel, but with a recipe. The baker gets the required ingredients from the boy's new friends and they all make one huge bagel. Bagel shapes abound, including a full moon with a the hole in the middle.

Wisconsin State Parks: A Complete Recreation Guide

Great Find
This book is very complete and informative. I was only familiar with Gov Dodge SP. After buying this book we planned 2 more camping trips to places we were unfamiliar with!! The details are great. Down to which campsites are shaded, gravel, good for RVs, etc.

Highly recommended!!

Invaluable
Living in WI and doing a lot of camping in state parks, I had been looking for a book like this for years. I actually started collecting all the Park Newspapers and creating my own scrapbook of parks, campsites etc. Then 3 years ago I found this book. WOW is saved me alot of time it has all the info for all the parks inclding campsite descriptions, hunting, hiking, fishing and concessions stand info.

As invaluable to someone recreating in WI as the Wisconsin Gazateer Map!!!

Valuable reference for campers!
This book is a must-have if you plan on camping in any of the Wisconsin State Parks.

Not only does it contain the usual maps and information for each park, but it also has descriptions of the campsites by campsite number! In my opinion, the campsite descriptions alone make the book worth buying.

I frequently make reservations at a campground before I visit a particular park for the first time. In the past I was assigned the next available campsite number and I had no idea what it is like until I arrived at the park. Several times I arrived at the park only to find that my site was quite sloped or too small to put my tent on!

Now, before calling in the reservations I read the book and pick out a few campsites that are level, grassy, and partly shaded (my preference!) and ask for them by number. It makes the entire camping trip so much more enjoyable.

I am a beginning camper and it was great to see - at a glance - what resources and activities were available at the different campgrounds. I especially like that its chapters are based on sections of the state, making it easy to find a close location for a quick day trip or a destination farther away to take a longer vacation. It even includes contact information for the places listed, so you can call ahead to find out about special activities. Great book!!
